Alexey Miller was already driving in Formula 1 for 5 seasons with Audi. This is the reason why his rating was not higher. Lumi Vaara was in Formula 1 only for one season before joining Red Bull. However, Williams was very uncompetitive that season and his rating took a very big hit. Because Red Bull knew this would happen, they signed their season sponsors at the beginning of the season when his rating was still very high (4,968.651).

Markelov’s and Doucet’s rating was low because they drove in Formula with uncompetitive cars at various points of their career. However, both drivers were world-class when it came to their skills. Othe the other hand, you have Kaderabek Jr and Szabo. Both only 28 when they joined McLaren with a lot of potential.


This is the other thing all of those drivers have in common. All were already max-out of had potential to do so in the future. In most series, secondary skills are not that important. In Formula 1 they are. This is why McLaren sometimes signed drivers with a lower rating. They had to compromise and having a more skilled driver trumps a higher rating in the long run. Red Bull was better at attracting world-class drivers with a higher rating and that gave them the edge.
